Intra (Riding for the Disabled)

The Israel National Therapeutic Riding Association (INTRA), based on the outskirts of Netanya, has enjoyed huge success improving the lives of the mentally and physically handicapped and of wounded soldiers. Experience has shown that the horse's movement mimics a human's hip movement and can help to re-educate a disabled body, making walking a possibility. Close contact with horses and riding high on their backs seems to have a calming effect and restores confidence. INTRA gives disabled people the opportunity to experience normal riding activity in a beautiful environment and to integrate with the able-bodied.
JNF UK supported INTRA between 2003 and 2009 during which time JNF donated more than £200,000 to improve the facilities and increase the number of therapies available. New stables, new outbuildings, equipment, horses, tack sponsorship of riders, medical equipment and special funding for teaching courses have been donated from fundraising in the UK.
