Walk for Water
Walk for Water 2007 – RAMON RAMBLE
Walk for Water 2007 is a unique fundraising initiative to raise £250,000 for a scheme to provide water to new communities in the Negev Desert.
Now in its 14th year, this year’s sponsored desert hike is part of a continuing programme by JNF to assist in the development of Israel’s water resources. Previous walks successfully supported the building of the Gesher and Ma’ale Reservoirs in the Beit She’an Valley and the massive Besor and Nitzana Reservoirs in the Negev which boast a capacity of over 4 million cubic metres of water. That is equivalent to 80% of the entire country’s annual rainfall!
As a hot Middle Eastern country, Israel has a constant water deficit. Agricultural, industrial and domestic usage consumes 100 million cubic metres more water than is replaced. The only untapped source that can meet this deficit is the 5 billion cubic metres of rainfall, which either evaporates or flows off unused into the sea. JNF is at the heart of the national programme to capture and store every drop of this rainwater.
Walk for Water 2007, which this year will take us to the central Negev, and in particular the Ramon Crater, is just one of many projects undertaken by the JNF to improve the physical, social and economic health of the nation.
This magnificent area in the Negev abounds with hiking trails of varying levels of difficulty. During the walk, we will encounter the many different forms of wildlife that are drawn to the water sources and the remains of thousands of years of settlement in the area – a window to the past that gives us a glimpse of the lifestyles led by the ancients in these harsh desert conditions.
JNF has reclaimed over 250,000 acres of land, laid 6,000 miles of roads, planted 200 million trees, prepared numerous sites for new housing, constructed 16 reservoirs and established 26 active recreation areas and regional parks.
