To Russia With Gloves
JNF UK’s To Russia With Gloves car rally roared into St Petersburg last week, raising £80,000 for projects supporting disabled children in Israel.
This year’s 35-car line-up – including a 1936 SS100 Jaguar, a silver Ferrari, two matching Bentleys and an environmentally-friendly Toyota Prius – drove through Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland en route to Russia.
JNF UK chief executive Simon Winters, driving a Corvette, described the rally, JNF UK’s 11th, as “like one long travelling simchah”.
He added: “What makes it good is the camaraderie. It’s about seeing the country, meeting the locals, visiting places of Jewish interest.”
Among more than 70 participants was grandmother Ruth Montlak, 74, and her granddaughter Shacha, 20, and 90-year-old Hilary Clive from Stanmore, a veteran of 10 rallies.
Funds raised will support the Aleh Negev Residential and Day Care Centre for severely mentally and physically disabled children in the Negev.
The carbon footprint of the entire rally would be offset, said Mr Winters, by planting trees in a Negev kibbutz.
