JNF Education is running a children’s tree campaign to coincide with the festival of Tu Bishvat – the New Year for Trees. This year’s theme is linked to the JNF Negev Campaign – Bringing Life To The Desert – and after Shmitta JNF will be greening areas and planting trees and shrubs around Aleh Negev, Givot Bar, and in the various new communities around Be’er Sheva.

JNF Education is running Tu Bishvat Seders in 16 primary and secondary schools. The facilitators, headed by Sarah Nysenbaum, Head of Informal Education, are visiting over 1300 children in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow, to run an interactive Tu Bishvat Seder in which the children taste four different kinds of fruit, and drink four cups of grape juice, as well as participating in a variety of activities.

Today the JNF team were at Rosh Pinah primary School in Edgware where the children sang songs, ate fruit, decided which type of fruit they were most like, and wrote their wishes for Israel on leaves which they stuck on a special tree.

‘We’ve had a fabulous time at 2 different schools so far today,’ said Sarah Nysenbaum, Head of Informal Education. ‘The children showed real enthusiasm for the activities, wishing Israel peace and prosperity in her 60th year. We are all really enjoying working with the primary and secondary schools this year.’
