JNF UK & UJIA CELEBRATE ISRAEL 60 AT WINDSOR CASTLE

Last Monday night was a historic event, as the singing of the Hatikvah resonated around Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Hall, sung by 300 guests and accompanied by the Band of the Irish Guards, to celebrate Israel 60.

It was also the first time a member of the Royal Family has officially taken part in Israel’s independence celebrations. The evening began with an exclusive reception in the Waterloo Room, hosted by HRH Prince Edward who spent time greeting guests and sharing stories. Guests included Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks and Ambassador Ron Prosor.

After dinner guests heard from Ambassador Prosor who spoke about Britain and Israel’s shared values. He also gave praise to both UJIA and JNF UK, in particular UJIA Chairman Mick Davis and JNF UK President Gail Seal saying, “As I acknowledge our wonderful surroundings, I also take my hat off to the two organisations that have come together to make tonight’s dinner possible; UJIA and JNF UK”.

He concluded by saying, “Tonight we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel. In the home of the Kings and Queens of the United Kingdom, we mark this historic occasion in a spirit of friendship. It was of course unfortunate that the Duke of Edinburgh was not well enough to attend. But it is my sincere hope that we one day have the opportunity to reciprocate the Royal Family’s hospitality. We in Israel look forward to someday welcoming Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Phillip in our ancient capital, the home of our Kings and Queens. As Jews the world over say at this time of year – “Next Year in Jerusalem.”

Before the evening ended guests were given a rare opportunity to visit the Grand Reception room, a room not open for public access.

Last night also saw the coming together of two of the UK’s largest Jewish charities, UJIA and JNF UK, something UJIA Chief Executive Douglas Krikler describes as, “a wonderful show of unity working towards a shared goal – to celebrate 60 years of the people and state of Israel.” He continues to say, “This special event was a great showcase of UK Jewry’s deep connection to Israel and the pride we share in her 60th anniversary. I am sure everyone will join me in wishing HRH Prince Philip a speedy recovery and we are very grateful to HRH Prince Edward for standing in so gallantly at the last minute”.

JNF UK Chief Executive Simon Winters agrees “The rousing singing of the Hatikvah in the Great Hall at Windsor Castle to the accompaniment of the Irish Guards band was a unique and particularly moving tribute to the UK Jewish Community. JNF UK are thrilled to have been able to jointly host such a magnificent occasion.”
