The Israel National Therapeutic Riding Association (INTRA) is non-profit organisation.
The centre, located in Neurim on the shores of the Mediterranean, north of Tel Aviv, welcomes mentally and physically challenged adults, children, survivors of terror attacks and injured soldiers.
Catering for an age range from 2 to 70, INTRA offers horse riding therapy (‘hippotherapy’) for a broad range of disabilities including brain injuries from trauma, cerebral vascular accidents (CVA), multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, autism, behavioural and emotional problems, blindness and deafness. Students are taught individualised skills, with hands-on training from a team of dedicated and highly skilled staff. Within weeks of starting INTRA lessons, most riders show dramatic improvement in their ability to face the challenges of their disability.
INTRA’s administrative and therapeutic director is Anita Shkedi. Orginally from England, Anita introduced therapeutic riding in Israel in 1985. She is the founder of Wingate Diploma for Therapeutic Riding Instructors. She is also a committee member of IPEC (International Paralympic Equestrian Committee) and has taught and trained instructors in therapeutic riding in more than 15 countries.
JNF UK has refurbished INTRA’s stables and provided funds for terror attack survivors and their families. They receive treatment and the chance to return to some semblance of emotional stability through the gentle therapy of horses.
