MICHA Jerusalem is non-profit volunteer organisation established in 1969 with the aim of providing an educational/habilitative programme for pre-school hearing-impaired children. Its programmes are available to all children in Jerusalem and the surrounding areas, regardless of social, religious, cultural or political background. Each child is accepted as soon as diagnosis is made at one of the local hospitals.
MICHA’s mission is to help bridge the gap between hearing-impaired children and their hearing peers, and to help help them integrate into normal hearing society. Under its universal charter, every infant is eligible for critical intervention during the vital early months and years. No child, regardless of the family’s financial situation, is denied the services of MICHA once hearing impairment has been determined.
MICHA Jerusalem cares for some 50 children per annum. This includes children in nursery school programmes and children who receive individual therapy. Most of the nursery school children are between the ages of 12 months and 3 years.
JNF UK has supported MICHA over the past few years. JNF UK gifts have enabled various projects which help both the children at MICHA and their families. These include:
- Acoustic adaptions at the MICHA Jerusalem Centre
- Scholarships
- Professional literature
- Occupational therapy equipment
- Promoting inclusion in an integrated kindergarten for hearing and hearing-impaired children at MICHA Jerusalem
