Jerusalem Botanical Gardens
JBG Newsletter 109 March 2008 for website.pdf
The Gardens provide much needed green space for the inhabitants of the city of Jerusalem and serve as a centre for education, research, tourism and recreation. They are the largest and most important botanical gardens in Israel.
Covering more than 45 acres, the Gardens display more than 10,000 species from all over the world. The Garden’s sections represent important geographical regions including Europe, the Mediterranean, North America, South Africa, Australia and Central Asia. Medicinal plants and spices are displayed separately and the Tropics are represented at the Dworsky’s Tropical Conservatory. Bulbs, trees, bonsai and other important collections are displayed throughout the Garden.
The Gardens also act as a living gene bank to protect endangered plants in Israel and beyond. 370 plant species are in immediate need of protection in Israel. Many of them are grown in the garden for conservation and educational needs.
The British Friends of the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens
The British Friends raise funds to provide scholarships for horticultural graduates who work in the Gardens for a minimum of six months. So far more than 90 students have benefited from this scheme, some becoming Head Gardeners in famous gardens around the world. Membership of the UK Friends costs just £15 per year. Information about events including garden visits, concerts and plant sales are included in the quarterly newsletter.
Gift Certificates
A range of beautiful commemorative certificates and gift membership certificates are available, with a choice of pictures depicting the wide variety of flowers and plants growing in the JBG.
Working Holiday
In conjunction with the Friends of Israel Educational Foundation, the Friends organise a two-week Working Holiday each March. These are wonderful fun, enjoyed by amateur and professional gardeners alike.
Greetings Cards
We offer packs of five greetings cards (blank for your own message), displaying different beautiful and striking plants found in the Gardens.
Bible Path
The British Friends continue to raise money to upgrade and extend the Bible Path at the Gardens which is dedicated to a former Patron, Ian Leese. New trees and shrubs are being planted, irrigations systems laid and signage developed. A commemorative certificate is available to acknowledge special donations.
