JNF UK’s annual Green Sunday appeal will this year raise funds for Israeli families who are experiencing poverty for the first time, due to the economic impact of Covid-19.
According to the Israeli government, over 40,000 families have fallen below the poverty line since March 2020. For many of these families, used to being able to provide for themselves, the financial impact will be accompanied by a significant psychological toll as well.
While Israel is a world leader in vaccinating its citizens, many Israelis are still struggling with the effects of three national lockdowns. JNF UK is therefore fundraising for one-off donations to these families, that will enable them to survive until the national economy recovers. This appeal is unique in that it is specifically targeted at those who have never needed financial support before.
While the Green Sunday appeal traditionally involves volunteers making hundreds of phone calls, this year social distancing measures mean that JNF UK is relying primarily on a postal appeal.
JNF UK Interim CEO Charles Lossos commented:
“Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on every country, and Israel is no exception. The three lockdowns have left thousands of families struggling to get by and make ends meet. JNF UK’s Green Sunday appeal will enable them to keep food on their tables and a roof over their heads until life returns to normal.”
